Standing Seam Metal Roofing Specifications

Most roofing companies will tell you their roof is "high quality." Very few will hand you the exact specifications, independent test ratings, and installation standards they build to. We believe you deserve to know exactly what is going on your home before you sign a contract.

Every standing seam roof we install is built to a published specification. We form our own 1.5-inch SnapLock standing seam panels on our roll-former using premium Galvalume steel or aluminum coil, install them over a fully adhered Polyglass Polystick XFR underlayment, and secure them with heavy-duty floating clips using double the manufacturer-recommended clip count.

This page serves as the specification sheet for the roofing systems we build. It brings together the materials, dimensions, installation standards, independent performance ratings, and warranties in one place, with links to the detailed pages that explain each component.

Key Specs Explained

Panel and Seam

We form our own 1.5-inch SnapLock standing seam panels on our roll-former using premium coated Galvalume steel or aluminum coil. Each panel is 16 inches wide, uses concealed floating clips, and has no exposed fasteners. For low-slope roofs and specialized high-wind applications, we also offer a mechanical (double-lock) standing seam system.

Learn more:

Gauge and Thickness

We install 22-gauge (.0285 inch) and 24-gauge (.0236 inch) steel. We never install 26-gauge steel. Aluminum roofing is measured in inches, not gauge, and is available in .032-inch and .040-inch thicknesses.

Learn more:

24 Gauge vs. 26 Gauge Metal Roofing

70% Kynar 500 Finish

Every roof we install features a 70% Kynar 500 PVDF finish, not the less expensive SMP coating found on many metal roofs. The finish is backed by a 40-year manufacturer finish warranty for long-term color retention and durability.

Learn more:

Kynar 500 vs. SMP Paint Systems

Clips and Fasteners

We install heavy-duty 16 to 18-gauge floating clips with two fasteners per clip. Clips are spaced 12 inches on center in the field and 9 inches on center around the roof perimeter, using approximately double the manufacturer-recommended clip count. Floating clips allow the panels to expand and contract with temperature changes.

Underlayment and Deck

Every standing seam roof is installed over Polyglass Polystick XFR, an 80 mil self-adhered full-deck underlayment rated to 265°F with Burn-Shield fire and ember resistance. We also install ice and water shield at eaves and valleys. Roofing is installed only over a minimum 1/2-inch (15/32-inch) APA-rated plywood or solid wood deck, and we always tear off to a sound deck before installation.
