Kynar 500 vs SMP: Which Metal Roof Coating Actually Lasts?

Kynar 500 is a premium PVDF coating and the best finish you can put on a metal roof. It bonds to the steel or aluminum at the factory and resists fading, chalking, dirt, and UV far longer than any other coating, holding its color for decades. We finish every roof in 70% Kynar 500, because the coating is what protects the metal and keeps your roof looking new for its whole life.

Kynar 500 is a PVDF coating built to hold its color and resist chalking for 30 to 40 years, while SMP, silicone-modified polyester, is a cheaper paint that starts to fade and chalk in as little as 10 to 15 years. Both look identical on day one, which is how a cheaper roof passes for a premium one, but only Kynar keeps its color and finish for the life of the roof. We use Kynar 500 only.

SMP stands for silicone-modified polyester, a lower-cost paint that many installers use to hit a cheaper price. We do not install it, because it fades, chalks, and loses its color years sooner than a PVDF coating, so a roof that looked great at first ends up dull and blotchy. On a roof meant to last 50 years, the finish should last too, which is why we only use Kynar 500.

A Kynar 500 finish resists noticeable fading for 40 years, which is why it carries one of the longest finish warranties in roofing. The PVDF coating holds its pigment against the sun instead of breaking down, so the color you choose today still looks sharp decades from now. That fade resistance is a big part of why a Kynar metal roof stays looking new far longer than a painted one.

70% Kynar 500 means the coating is made with 70 percent PVDF resin, which is the premium, full-strength formulation. Some cheaper finishes use less Kynar or blend it down to cut cost, which weakens the fade and chalk resistance. When we say 70% Kynar 500, we are telling you the coating is the real, full-strength version, not a diluted one, so it performs the way Kynar is supposed to.

A premium metal roof coating is baked on at the factory, not painted on at a shop or in the field. The steel or aluminum coil runs through an oven that bonds the Kynar 500 into the surface, which is why it holds up so much better than any paint applied afterward. If someone offers to spray or roll a finish onto bare metal, it will not last, because only a factory-baked coating truly bonds.

A Kynar 500 coating costs a little more than a cheap SMP paint, but is standard on our metal roofs. It is the reason your roof still looks new in 40 years instead of faded in 10. Because our standing seam panels have Kynar 500 baked on to them, that premium coating is already part of our standard price, not an upsell. Redoing a faded finish later costs far more than doing it right once.

The coating matters as much as the metal because it is what you actually see and what protects the steel from the sun. Two roofs can use the same panels and look completely different in ten years: the Kynar-coated one still crisp and colorful, the SMP one faded and chalky. The metal gives the roof its strength, but the coating gives it its looks and its color life, so both have to be premium.

A Kynar 500 roof is not repainted with ordinary paint, because the baked-on PVDF finish rejects paint causing it to slide off. If you ever want to change the color or restore an older roof, it has to be professionally recoated with a compatible Kynar system and is not cheap.
