SMP stands for silicone-modified polyester. It is an economy metal roof coating commonly used on exposed-fastener roofing, agricultural buildings, and lower-cost metal roofing because it costs less to manufacture than PVDF coatings like Kynar 500.

The lower price is the reason it appears on many low bids.

The trade-off is long-term appearance.

SMP loses gloss faster than PVDF.

It is more susceptible to ultraviolet degradation.

Over time, it begins to chalk, fade, and lose the rich color it had when it was new.

SMP also becomes less flexible as it ages.

The reason is chemistry.

PVDF is built around a carbon-fluorine bond, one of the strongest chemical bonds known.

That bond gives the coating exceptional resistance to ultraviolet radiation, oxidation, smog, heat cycling, and weathering.

Instead of gradually breaking down in the sun, Kynar paint maintains its appearance year after year.

When we say 70% Kynar 500, we are telling you the coating is the real, full-strength version, not a diluted one, so it performs the way Kynar is supposed to.

A premium metal roof coating is baked on at the factory, not painted on at a shop or in the field. The steel or aluminum coil runs through an oven that bonds the Kynar 500 into the surface, which is why it holds up so much better than any paint applied afterward. If someone offers to spray or roll a finish onto bare metal, it will not last, because only a factory-baked coating truly bonds.

A Kynar 500 coating costs a little more than a cheap SMP paint, but is standard on our metal roofs. It is the reason your roof still looks new in 40 years instead of faded in 10. Because our standing seam panels have Kynar 500 baked on to them, that premium coating is already part of our standard price, not an upsell. Redoing a faded finish later costs far more than doing it right once.
