Kynar vs SMP

What is the fundamental chemistry difference between Kynar 500 and SMP?

Kynar 500 uses polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin at a minimum 70% concentration. SMP uses silicone modified polyester resin. The fluorine bonds in PVDF resist UV degradation at the molecular level, which is why PVDF coatings maintain color accuracy twice as long as SMP formulations.

What is the cost difference for a residential roof?

Kynar 500 coatings add approximately $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot compared to SMP. On a 2,000 square foot roof, that translates to $1,000 to $2,000 in additional material cost. The trade-off is a 40-year color warranty versus a 20 to 25-year warranty. See the full cost analysis.

When is SMP an acceptable choice for residential projects?

SMP is acceptable when the roof is not visible from street level, when budget constraints require the lowest possible material cost, or when the property owner plans to sell within 15 years. For high-visibility roof planes and long-term ownership, Kynar 500 is the specification we recommend. Browse the full color palette for both coating types.
