Standing Seam Metal Roof Warranty Guide: The Four You Should Get

A roof can carry a 40-year paint warranty and still fail in year six because the part that failed was the labor, and only the installer warranties that.

A properly installed standing seam roof carries several different warranties, each protecting a different part of the system. Paint can be covered for up to 40 years on qualifying systems, while separate warranties protect the metal substrate, underlayment, and workmanship. We back our workmanship for 8 years and coordinate the manufacturer's weathertight warranty on eligible projects.

The Four Metal Roof Warranties

The Four Warranties On A Metal Roof

A standing seam metal roof is protected by several different warranties, not just one. Each warranty covers a different part of the roofing system, and understanding the difference tells you who is responsible if something goes wrong.

Paint Warranty

The paint warranty protects the factory-applied finish against excessive fading, chalking, and coating failure. On qualifying standing seam systems, paint coverage can extend up to 40 years and is transferable under the manufacturer's requirements.

Substrate Warranty

The substrate warranty protects the metal itself against manufacturing defects and corrosion. This warranty is written by the metal manufacturer and varies by the roofing system you choose.

Underlayment Warranty

The underlayment manufacturer warranties the waterproof membrane installed beneath the metal roof. This protects the underlayment product itself, separate from the roofing installation.

Workmanship Warranty

The workmanship warranty covers the installation itself, including the labor required to install the roof correctly. Only the roofing contractor can provide this warranty because only the contractor controls the quality of the installation. We back every qualifying installation with an 8-year workmanship warranty.

Manufacturer's Weathertight Warranty

On eligible projects, the roof manufacturer may also provide a separate weathertight warranty covering the complete roofing assembly when installed in accordance with its specifications.

Each warranty protects something different.

Together, they provide complete coverage for the roofing system instead of relying on a single promise that leaves important gaps.

Why Workmanship Length Matters Most

The workmanship warranty is the most important warranty on your roof because it covers the installation itself. Paint manufacturers do not warranty flashing details, panel installation, clip spacing, or workmanship errors. If the roof leaks because it was installed incorrectly, only the roofing contractor is responsible for correcting it.

Most metal roof problems are not caused by defective materials.

They are caused by installation details.

Flashing.

Clip spacing.

Panel alignment.

Fastener placement.

Those are workmanship issues, not manufacturing issues.

A paint warranty does not cover them.

A substrate warranty does not cover them.

An underlayment warranty does not cover them.

Only the contractor's workmanship warranty covers the quality of the installation.

That is why the company installing your roof matters just as much as the materials being installed.

We worked hard to get all of the proper training and licensure. While we offer an 8-year workmanship warranty, we are confident you will never need it.

Our 8-Year Workmanship Warranty

We back every qualifying installation with an 8-year workmanship warranty. We are selective about the products we install because our name goes on every roof.

We only use the very best metal. We offer an 8-year warranty and only feel comfortable offering it on these two metals. That should tell you something.

Those manufacturers are:

Each manufacturer provides its own paint warranty, substrate warranty, and available weathertight warranty according to its published terms and the roofing system selected.

Rather than trying to make one warranty cover everything, every part of the roofing system is backed by the party responsible for it.

That means you receive our 8-year workmanship warranty along with the applicable manufacturer warranties for qualifying projects.

When your roof is complete, you have clear documentation showing what each warranty covers and who stands behind it.

Metal Roof Warranty Comparison

Every warranty protects a different part of the roofing system. Knowing what each warranty covers, who provides it, and how long it lasts makes it easier to understand the protection your roof carries.

Keeping Warranties Valid And Transferable

A quality standing seam roof is built to deliver decades of performance, and the warranties that come with it are designed to protect that investment. Following the manufacturer's requirements keeps every applicable warranty in force, and qualifying paint warranties can often be transferred to the next homeowner.

Manufacturer warranties generally require:

  • Installation according to the manufacturer's specifications
  • Approved roofing components and accessories
  • Proper warranty registration when required
  • No unauthorized modifications that affect the roofing system

One of the most valuable features of many qualifying paint warranties is transferability.

If you sell your home, the new owner may be able to receive the remaining paint warranty by completing the manufacturer's transfer process. That added protection can become another selling point for your home.

Because warranty requirements differ by manufacturer and roofing system, we explain exactly which warranties apply to your project, who issues each one, and what is required to keep them in effect. That way, you know exactly what protection your new roof carries from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standing seam metal roof from us comes with two layers of warranty: our 8-year workmanship warranty on the installation, and the manufacturer's warranty on the metal and its Kynar 500 finish. The manufacturer stands behind the product, and we stand behind how it is installed. Together they cover the two things that actually determine whether a roof lasts: the materials and the work.

Our 8-year workmanship warranty covers the installation of the underlayment, ice & water barrier, the clips, the flashings, the seams, and everything we form and fasten on your roof. If a leak or a problem ever traces back to how we installed the roof, we come back and make it right.

The manufacturer's warranty covers the metal panels and their Kynar 500 coating for 40 years, protecting against defects, rust-through, and the finish fading or chalking prematurely. We install only Taylor and Sheffield metals, so your panels carry the strong material and finish warranties those manufacturers stand behind.

We offer our workmanship warranty only on Taylor Metals and Sheffield Metals because those are the two brands we trust enough to put our name behind. Both make premium, Kynar-coated standing seam metal with proven quality, so we know the material will perform as long as our installation does. When a contractor limits their warranty to only the best brands, that should tell you something about others.

The Kynar 500 finish carries up to a 40-year warranty against fading and chalking, one of the longest finish warranties in roofing. That length reflects how well PVDF holds its color compared to cheaper SMP paint, which is why we finish every roof in 70% Kynar 500. Your color is protected for the better part of the roof's life, not just the first several years.

A material warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers the product, the metal and its coating, against defects. A workmanship warranty comes from the installer and covers the labor, the flashings, seams, and fastening. You need both, because a perfect panel installed poorly still leaks, and a flawless installation cannot fix a defective product. We provide the workmanship side and install only brands with strong material warranties.

Because the metal and its Kynar coating almost never fail on their own; nearly every roof problem comes from how it was installed. A long warranty on the panels means little if the flashing leaks or the clips let go, and those are workmanship issues, not material defects. That is why the installer's workmanship warranty and track record matter more than any number on the material warranty. We stand behind our install directly.

A metal roof warranty can be voided by a poor installation, by later work from another contractor who cuts into the roof, or by walking on and denting the panels. Manufacturer warranties also require the product to be installed to their specifications, which is one more reason to use a true metal specialist. We install to spec and stand behind the work, so your warranties stay intact.

For most homes, yes. A properly installed standing seam roof lasts 50+ years, with little to no maintenance in between. You pay once instead of re-roofing every couple of decades. It is one of the few upgrades you may never have to buy again.
