Vulcan Vents for Metal Roofs
A wildfire rarely reaches a home as a wall of flame. It usually arrives first as a storm of wind-driven embers, and one of the easiest ways into a home is through the attic vents. That is why we install Vulcan Vents on every standing seam roof we build. They are engineered to stay open for everyday ventilation and automatically swell shut when exposed to intense heat.
Vulcan Vents are one of the most ingenious products we install because they solve two competing problems at the same time. Your attic needs continuous airflow to remove heat and moisture, yet those same openings can become vulnerable during a wildfire. Vulcan's patented intumescent technology allows the vent to do both jobs automatically.
During normal conditions, the vent allows fresh air to move through the attic while a 304 stainless steel mesh with 1/8-inch openings helps block flying embers. When exposed to the heat of an approaching fire, the intumescent coating expands, sealing the opening to block embers, flame, and heat while creating a one-hour firewall.
We always install Vulcan roof venting as part of every standing seam roof we build. Combined with a non-combustible standing seam metal roof and Polyglass Polystick XFR fire-resistant underlayment, it forms an important layer of a complete roofing system designed to protect your home from wildfire, water intrusion, and severe weather.

How Vulcan Vents Work: They Swell Shut
Vulcan Vents protect your home with a two-stage defense system. Every day, a 304 stainless steel mesh with 1/8-inch openings allows your attic to breathe while helping block flying embers. If intense wildfire heat reaches the vent, an intumescent coating expands and seals the vent completely shut, blocking embers, flame, and heat while forming a one-hour firewall.
The first stage works continuously. A noncombustible 304 stainless steel mesh allows fresh air to flow through the attic while helping prevent flying embers from entering the home. Because the mesh is stainless steel, it continues providing ember protection for the life of the vent.
The second stage activates only when it is needed. As the heat from an approaching wildfire reaches the vent, the intumescent coating rapidly expands, completely sealing the vent opening. Instead of remaining a pathway into the attic, the vent becomes a barrier that blocks embers, flames, and heat, creating a one-hour firewall that helps protect the roof structure beneath.
The system requires no electricity, sensors, motors, batteries, or moving mechanical parts. It simply reacts to heat exactly as it was engineered to do.
It is a remarkably simple idea with an equally remarkable result: a vent that stays open for airflow every day and closes itself in a fire.
Why Not Just Seal the Vents?
Because your attic has to breathe. Sealing every attic vent would keep embers out, but it would also trap heat and moisture inside the attic. The solution is not eliminating ventilation. It is installing ember-resistant vents that provide normal airflow every day and swell shut in a fire.
Think of attic ventilation like opening windows on opposite sides of your home. Open one window and you get a little air movement. Open the opposite window and you create a cross-breeze that continuously flushes fresh air through the house.
Your attic works the same way. Cool outside air enters low through the soffit vents, then warms as it moves through the attic. As that air heats up, it naturally rises and exits through the roof vents at the highest point of the roof. This continuous flow removes excess heat and moisture before they can build up.
Without proper ventilation, attic temperatures can exceed 150°F during the summer, baking the roof from below, increasing cooling costs, and trapping moisture that can damage the roof deck and promote mold growth.
That is why simply sealing the attic is not the answer. Your roof needs balanced ventilation to perform properly. The answer is ember-resistant vents that let your attic breathe under normal conditions and become a protective barrier only when they are needed.

Roof Vents and Soffit Vents
Roof vents and soffit vents perform different jobs, and both are essential for a healthy attic.
Roof vents exhaust hot air from the top of the attic. Soffit vents bring cooler outside air in at the eaves. Together they create the continuous airflow that keeps heat and moisture moving out of the attic.
Roof Vents
Roof vents are the exhaust side of the ventilation system, located at the highest point of the roof where hot air naturally collects.
We always install Vulcan roof venting on every standing seam roof we build.
On homes with a gable roof, where there is a continuous ridge, we install Vulcan Ridge Vents that run the full length of the roof peak. This provides the most even and efficient exhaust ventilation across the attic.
On homes with a hip roof, where there is no continuous ridge, we install Vulcan Low-Profile Roof Vents near the top of the roof. The number and spacing of these vents are determined by the attic's required ventilation. They use the same intumescent technology and swell shut in a fire.

Soffit Vents
Soffit vents are the intake side of the ventilation system, located beneath the eaves where cooler outside air enters the attic.
Hardening the soffits is available as an upgrade, not part of our standard roof installation. Depending on your home, we can install Vulcan soffit vents or completely enclose the eaves in metal, eliminating vulnerable soffit openings while maintaining a clean architectural appearance.

Which Vulcan Profile Does Your Roof Get?
Vulcan does not make one generic vent. It makes a profile engineered for each part of a roof, and we spec the right one for yours so fire protection never costs you airflow or a clean finish.
- A standing seam ridge gets a J-profile vent that tucks under a vented ridge cap and exhausts the peak without breaking your panel lines.
- A gable ridge gets a continuous ridge vent. A hip roof, which has no continuous ridge, gets low-profile off-ridge vents spaced across the upper roof.
- Eaves get a continuous soffit profile for fresh-air intake, and pair with a metal eave enclosure when you want the eave itself hardened.

Whole-Home Ember Defense
Your roof is only one place where wind-driven embers can enter a home. Vulcan applies the same stainless steel mesh and intumescent swell-shut technology to other vulnerable openings, allowing the entire home to breathe normally while providing automatic protection during a fire.
Gable-End Vents
Gable-end vents are mounted high in the exterior walls at each end of the attic. During a wildfire, wind-driven embers can strike these openings directly. Vulcan gable-end vents allow normal attic ventilation while helping prevent embers from entering the attic. If exposed to intense heat, the intumescent material activates and seals the opening.
Foundation and Crawlspace Vents
Wind-driven embers do not only attack the roof. They can also be blown beneath a home through foundation and crawlspace vents, where they may ignite combustible materials below the floor system.
Vulcan's foundation and crawlspace vents use the same ember-resistant stainless steel mesh and intumescent technology, helping protect another vulnerable part of the home without restricting everyday ventilation.
Retrofit Vents and Retrofit Kits
Many existing homes already have roof, gable, foundation, or crawlspace vents that homeowners would prefer not to replace completely. Vulcan offers retrofit vents and retrofit kits that incorporate the same 304 stainless steel mesh and intumescent honeycomb technology, allowing many existing vents to be upgraded instead of removed.

How We Seal Every Vent Against Embers
A vent is only as fire-safe as the seam where it meets the roof. We run a bead of EverKem 814+ intumescent firestop caulk behind the nailing flange of every Vulcan vent we install, closing the gap an ember could otherwise slip through. Like the vent's own coating, the caulk swells when it meets fire heat, so the joint seals tighter at the exact moment it matters most. It is a small step most crews skip, and it is standard on every vent we set.
