Why Are Open Eaves a Wildfire Weak Point?
Your eaves are a weak point because embers collect there and find combustible material waiting. Wind-driven embers ride up the wall and get trapped under the overhang, against exposed rafter tails and wood soffit boards that ignite easily.
If the soffit has open or unrated vents, embers pull straight through into the attic. Once inside, they land on insulation and stored belongings, and the fire starts where no one can see it. Hardening the eaves removes the fuel and closes the opening.
What Is a Metal Eave Enclosure?
A metal eave enclosure wraps the underside of your roof overhang, the soffit and the exposed rafter tails, in noncombustible metal. We form the panels in the same steel or aluminum as your roof and color-match them to your trim, so the edge of the roof reads as one clean line instead of a strip of weathered wood.
Because the metal will not ignite, rot, or peel, it stands up to both ember exposure and the sun far better than a painted wood or vinyl soffit.
Vented or Sealed: How We Protect Your Intake
We enclose eaves two ways, and which one we use depends on how your attic breathes.
Most homes draw their intake air at the eaves, so we build the enclosure with vented metal soffit panels and fire-rated vents. Your attic keeps pulling the fresh air it needs, but the only opening left is a Vulcan vent engineered to stop embers, with a stainless steel mesh that lets air through and an intumescent coating that swells shut under fire heat.
On homes where the intake can be located elsewhere, we seal the eave completely vent-free for the maximum possible ember protection. Either way, you are never trading airflow for fire safety or the reverse. We size the intake first, then choose the enclosure that fits it.
