What Is Defensible Space and Why Is It Required?
Defensible space is the buffer zone between a structure and the surrounding vegetation. California Public Resources Code 4291 requires property owners in State Responsibility Areas (SRA) and designated fire hazard zones to maintain defensible space extending 100 feet from all structures. This buffer dramatically reduces the chance of wildfire reaching your home.
What Are the Three Defensible Space Zones?
Zone 0 (0 to 5 feet) is the ember-resistant zone immediately around the structure requiring non-combustible materials and no vegetation. Zone 1 (5 to 30 feet) is the lean, clean, and green zone with managed landscaping. Zone 2 (30 to 100 feet) requires reduced fuel loads with proper spacing between trees and shrubs. Each zone has specific vegetation management requirements.
How Does Defensible Space Work With a Fire-Rated Roof?
Defensible space and Class A fire-rated roofing work as complementary systems. The defensible space reduces flame contact and ember generation near the structure, while the metal roof prevents ignition from any embers that reach it. Together with fire hardening of the structure, this creates a comprehensive protection strategy.
What Does a Defensible Space Consultation Include?
Our consultation includes a property walk documenting current conditions in all three zones, identification of specific vegetation management needs, a written report with prioritized recommendations, and a compliance roadmap. We also identify structural vulnerabilities that should be addressed through ember-resistant roofing and other fire-hardening measures.
Compliance Documentation Provided
Every defensible space consultation produces documented findings that can be provided to insurance carriers and local fire authorities. This documentation supports insurance renewal and demonstrates compliance with PRC 4291.
